Food Safety Certification
The number of companies undertaking the certification process is growing due to contractual needs in the sector as well as for competitive differentiation. Certifications are generally voluntary and come in many types, some of which are recognized internationally and pursued by producers to facilitate export. Certifications are generally voluntary and come in many types, some of which are recognized internationally and pursued by producers to facilitate export. The Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), one of the most authoritative and universally known organizations, recognizes and approves certifications that meet specific food safety standards:
Food Safety Certification
- BRC (British Retail Consortium) and IFS (International Featured Standard) Food ‒ serve as references for quality, safety and HACCP for companies operating in large-scale distribution.
- FSSC 22000 (Food Safety System Certification Scheme) ‒ combines and implements the requirements of ISO 22000 and ISO/TS 22002 for food and packaging production, extends to various sectors of the supply chain (e.g., distribution and storage, agriculture, and catering), and is consistent with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards.
- HARPC (Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventive Control) ‒ a method for standardizing processes and food safety plans required by the FDA, necessary for export to the American market, which includes defining a Food Safety Plan with a broader risk assessment compared to the HACCP system and inclusive of Food Defense principles related to intentional contamination actions.
- Other certifications companies can choose to adhere to are those defined by international standards, such as ISO 22000, which establishes the requirements for designing and implementing a Food Safety Management System, or ISO 22005, which outlines the requirements for a supply chain traceability system.
Flashtox supports companies with the aforementioned certifications as well as with the following:
- Organic certification under Regulation (EU) 848/2018, where the product must contain at least 95% organic ingredients and meet specific conditions for the remaining 5%.
- Quality certifications (DOP, IGP, SGP, DOC, DOCG, IGT) that meet specific requirements of originality regarding the geographical origin of the product and its ingredients.
- Religious certifications (Halal and Kosher)
- Vegetarian/Vegan certifications, a growing and relatively new market, for which there is no unified certification at the European or international level: Flashtox provides expertise to guide companies in developing a control and analysis system for obtaining certification.
